Exercise for Exercise’s Sake

Everyone should exercise about an hour a day. Our body needs it. Bad. If you can’t find an hour try to find 15 minutes. If you can’t find 15 minutes try to find 60 seconds. Anything helps.

But there is another wrinkle to the need for exercise. Do you exercise well? The body is a machine that is designed specifically with each muscle having a set function, meant to move in a certain way.

Forgive the shakiness of the above video but if you can focus on some of the swinging legs try to see if any two legs are doing the same thing? Is any core stability involved? What are They trying to accomplish? I guess swinging your leg isn’t bad in and of itself but how are you swinging it and why? The why should inform the how and everything should add up to building a more finely tuned machine.

There is a technique for everything which doesn’t mean you can’t get away with doing it wrong. I just like to remind students and clients that what you can get away with in your 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s might not be so helpful in your 80’s or 90’s.
