I am happy to share with a guest post from David Haas, a blogger for the  Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance. The primary cause and risk factor for mesothelioma cancer is exposure to asbestos.
Hiking With A Cancer Diagnosis
Hiking is one of the most challenging sports, but it builds strength and self-satisfaction. Mountains, trails and hills are all excellent areas for hiking. If there are trails in your area, it is easy to get started with a hiking program. Starting with a friend or a group is important for safety, so that should be your first goal.
Why Choose Hiking
Going out to hike demands strength and fearlessness. There is a good chance you will end up on a trail with rocky ledges or high altitudes. It requires inner strength to keep yourself from backing down. Cancer patients can gain the power it takes to fight cancer through hiking excursions. There is something highly symbolic about hiking a challenging peak and conquering those fears and tribulations.
Hiking Safely
Safety is the most important thing when taking up hiking. As a cancer patient you must be aware of the risks involved in such an intense activity. It’s true that you can hike regardless of what stage of cancer you are in, but safety must be a priority. You will want to invest in proper shoes, clothing and equipment. A backpack and a water bottle with plenty of capacity are strongly recommended.
You should also only hike in a group or with another individual. Another person can help you hoist your body over obstacles, provide assistance in case of an emergency and guide you in an unknown area.
Where To Hike
Fresh air is important. Hiking in clean state parks or national parks is the opportunity of a lifetime. Mesothelioma and lung cancer patients can benefit even more from the cool and pure air on hiking trails. Breathing in nature and getting sunlight can boost energy, sense of well-being and quality of life. It also reduces the possibility of depression. With that said, hiking anywhere that inspires you is a good choice. Enthusiastic hikers may want to make it a goal to visit the major hiking locations in the United States. Zion National Park is an excellent choice for those on a soul-searching journey.
How Hiking Helps
Hiking helps those with a cancer diagnosis because it strengthens the body. Hiking is very involved. You use all of your muscles and strength. It will build endurance as well. Hikers are often strong in other activities, so it is a gateway to a world of fitness. The fresh air and great atmosphere are just part of the package. The challenges you face while hiking will give you the sense that any other challenge in life is easily conquered.
